This belt helps protect your back from doing heavy deadlifts or squats. If your main focus is strength, then this belt can help you increase your lifts beyond your normal lifting capabilities. If your goal is to remain healthy, then you don't really need this since I would rather have you focusing on core mechanics on lower weights and not forgo the important muscles for the lift. For example, when deadlifting or squatting, the core is involved when you pull or push the bar. If you wear the belt, it will reduce the amount of activity going on in the core and transfer that to the belt thus decreasing your overall core muscle strength. Of course, when you're going really heavy, it's always good to be safe than sorry.
